MIKES ALL-TIME GREATEST GAMES!

Here they are, in order of greatness!

1

DooM!

ID software's Legendary first-person shooter, the game that spawned mass-modding, LAN parties and the FPS as we know it today, wolfenstien was just another 'maze' game, but this..this was greatness. Not since Pong and not until Half life did any other game have quite the impact this one did. And the doom community is still alive today, making levels, episodes and TC's just as much, if not more so, than all those university students in 1995

Grand theft auto: Vice city

When i first got GTA on the playstation i was hooked, i promised myself i'd play it for at least 5 minutes every day until i died..er..well not quite. Anyway, GTA 3 was a huge leap into 3D for the series, but Vice city improved upon that in almost every way, Tons of well-modeled vehicles which are all fun to drive in thier own way, Loads of weapons, Tons of varied missions and side-quests...You can play this game for months and still find new jokes, hear something you hadnt noticed before on the (also brilliant) radio stations, or try something mad like shooting everyone in a police station, chucking a grenade into dancers at (your) nightclub, or just going sightseeing in a luxury yacht, This game has near infinite replay value, long may the GTA series continue!

Final fantasy VI (6)

Regarded by many as the greatest Final fantasy of them all, It pushed the humble SNES console to its limits with graphics that still look good today, great sound effects and music, and a vast world filled with adventure. Plus you play as a group of rebels bringing down an evil empire which pollutes the rivers and air, forces itself upon less fortunate people, covers up exciting things and says "anyone who isnt for us is against us!", There is tons of spells and items, loads of cool characters (including the coolest character in anything ever, Celes!) and hours and hours of play value

4

GTA 3

Overshadowed by the masterpiece known as Vice city, but still great, Its modern, darker, urban-nightmare setting, "anonymous" character and the m16 (most satisfying videogame weapon ever) give it a fun factor all its own. When i first got it my brother walked in the room and said "Well...does it fucking rule?", yes, and it always will!

5

Soldier of fortune 2

So what if ive only ever got as far as the jungle, this FPS has the most disgustingly realistic gore system in the world, its fun to just play a random mission and spray bullets from the heavy machine gun into enemies, then go and look at them saying "oh, that one got it in the eye, and i shot this blokes heart out" ect

6

Final fantasy 7

Not as good as 6, but way better than 8...This game also features a band of rebels fighting to bring down an evil empire..well, at the start anyway, the last bit isnt as good. Its graphics are better (but still cutsey and RPG-like, not ultra-realistic like the more recent, and shit, final fantasies), the magic system is the best one in any RPG, and you can ride a cool motorbike..an amazing game

Total Anniahlation

This RTS came out not long after the classic "Command and conquer", one of the Playstation's first games, But it was very much ahead of its time, With 3D units (you couldnt move the camera around to look at them though, but they turned and moved a lot more convincingly that C&C's otherwise prettier sprites), Semi 3D terrain (2D pictures with 3D data added on) and a realistic physics system so that cannons on hills could shoot further, ect. Add to this a gigantic array of units, an awesome futuristic setting, huge potential for modding (thousands of units and maps where once floating round the net, though most sites are dead now), and a great user-friendly interface with tons of options for customisation (what other RTS of the time let you CHOOSE if you wanted a left or right click mouse interface?), and gameplay that was simple on the surface, but had numerous complexities, with unit strengths and weaknesses, which could make you unstoppable if exploited correctly. Still the most fun RTS i have ever played, i dont think any other one even comes close to the gameplay you can find here

8

Grand Theft Auto

Here we are, the birthplace of it all.. Even in 1997 this game was considered a bit "Retro", it had blocky buildings, 2-D cars and a gameplay mechanic anyone could understand. There was also massive controvesy over it, despite GTA3 and Vice city being largely ignored by the media (though some planes crashing into some buildings in america helped). Still, it was fun to tear around cities avoiding the cops and trying to make all 2 million points required to get to San andreas by murdering people and blowing up cars, rather than doing missions..

9

Empire Earth

Think of Age of Empires, Make it 3D, change the limit of expansion from the Copper age to the Nano age of the 25th century, and you have Empire earth!. The vast scope of this game is its main attraction, start up a skirmish on a large map, and within a few hours you will have played the entire range of human military history, from grunting cavemen with clubs, up to knights in armour, imperial riflemen and all the way up to advanced robotic "cybers". The skirmishes may be great fun, but the missions arent quite as good, for a start theyre pretty hard (well..i dont play much RTS games anyway..except TA), add to this the dubious german campaign where you effectivley play as hitler...ok so germany was certianly a "major force" on world history in the 20th century, but they could have made you be france or someone (fighting as the resistance, then clearing the way for the allied forces on D-Day). Another annoying feature is how you are seemingly 'forced' to be one civilisation, for instance, in the copper age all the soldiers look decidedly roman, no matter who you are, in the imperial age and the world war 1 age, your soldiers all sound british, even those flying german planes and driving german tanks (and in skirmish games you can use both), then in modern times and the digital age, everyone becomes american (even if you are still the romans, who could have been 'changed' into the italians and use italian planes and tanks), finally in the nano age everybody is suddenly russian..interesting. But i suppose if they where to include seperate units for every civilisation at every age it would have been way too big (not to mention in the bronze age the british where still the same as the prehistoric age, and the united states simply didnt exist, ect)

10

Colony Wars

The first in the Colony wars series on the Playstation, this game was the simplest one to play, and pretty fun (though to be fair i havent played the other two), you had your spaceship, you shot enemies, something unexpected appeared (happened on most levels), you shot that too. Some annoying things where that you couldnt choose which ship you wanted to use on which level (the heavy bomber would have been useful on the last one!), and some missions where near impossible to get the right outcome on (like the "rescue the battlecruiser" one, where two frigates appear and hold it in tractor beams). But apart from these annoyances it was a brillaint game, and had multiple endings
